The fort was built in 1612 to watch and guard against the Dutch and the Marathas. It was a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe. This old Portuguese fortification stands on the beach south of Candolim, at the shore of the Mandovi River. Earlier, it was tasked with the defense of shipping and the Bardez sub district in the vicinity.
A freshwater spring within the fortification provided water supply to the ships that used to stop by. This is how the fort got its name Aguada, meaning Water. Crews of passing ships would often visit to replenish their fresh water stores. A four-storey Portuguese lighthouse is placed on the shore, erected in 1864 and the oldest of its kind in the whole of Asia. Constructed in 1612, it was once the grandstand of 79 cannons. It has the capacity of storing 2,376,000 gallons of water, one of the biggest freshwater reservoirs of Asia.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus church is one of a kind in India and is known for its exemplary baroque architecture. Built in the year 1594 and consecrated in 1605, the building of this church coincides with the beginning of Christianity in India. The church is located in Old Goa in Bainguinim about 10 km away from Panjim. The oldest church in Goa, Basilica of Bom Jesus holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier, a special friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Even after 400 years, the remains are in a good condition and are taken out once every decade.
Literally translating to 'Holy Jesus', the basilica of Bom Jesus is the only church in Old Goa that is not been plastered on the outside. The facade of the church has a triangular roofing which is delicately carved with the initials 'IHS', which is an abbreviation for Jesuit emblem meaning 'Jesus, Saviour of Men'. Inside, the floor of this church is made of marble mosaic with precious stones, giving it a solemn appearance.
Dudhsagar falls in Goa are a pleasant change in landscape for a destination that is known for its sunny beaches and inviting waves. The majestic falls are a little farther inland approximately 60 km from Panaji on the Goa - Karnataka Border. As these falls are located inside the Mollem National Park, their vistas of green and verdant forest lands are unparalleled.
Cascading from the mighty peaks of the Western Ghats, these are among the highest waterfalls in the country and one of the hundred highest waterfalls in the world. The falls are divided into four tiers on the Mandovi river and resemble a heavy rush of milk flowing effortlessly down the hill.
A bastion of history and beauty - Chapora Fort is in North Goa and is located 10 km away from Mapusa. The Fort is undeniably one of the most famous forts in Goa. Built by the Portuguese in 1717, Chapora Fort has a long and fascinating history attached to it. History tells us that the fortifications around the current location of the fort had existed long before the Portuguese even landed in Goa. However, the fort was known by a different name then and was reconstructed by the Portuguese. The fort gets its name from Chapora River that flows right alongside it.
In the current times, however, the fort has gained a place of importance as 'Dil Chahta Hain' Fort and was so named after the 2001 blockbuster that was shot here. A fascinating escape, it offers beautiful views of the sea and Chapora River.
A little to the south of Palolem in Cancona region of Goa lies the Butterfly beach. This beach, also known as Honeymoon Beach, is in the form of small cove surrounded by dense trees. It is at slightly remote and is difficult to access on foot, making it one of the most secluded and peaceful beaches in Goa. It can be reached via a ferry from the neighboring Palolem Beach. Interestingly, the beach is so named as the surrounding trees attract a wide variety of butterflies occasionally. It may also be because the beach itself is in the shape of a butterfly!
